Can you point out ten important causes for traffic congestion in the city (Bangalore)?

1. Jumping signals

2. Short distance signals

3. Unorganized road signages

4. Local repair works

5. Due to officials passing

6. U turns

7. Narrow roads

8. Vehicles breakdown on roads & accidents

9. Religious issues

10.commercial and other Buildings

11.Lack of public transport like metro

12.cows and other animals

13.slow push cart/bullock cart

14.lack of pedestrian crossings

15.lack of footpaths

16.unplanned roads(wide at some places and narrow at junctions)

17.BMTC bus stops

18.BMTC busses

19.Political party meetings

20.No one bothered about traffic (complain but don’t do much)

1.Cows and other animals: We cannot blame the animals for traffic and it cannot be a major issue for traffic.

2.Lack of pedestrian crossings & pedestrian footpath: Pedestrian crossing is there at all signals. Now-a-days footpath is being mainly used by bikers and I don't feel this can be the cause for traffic.

3.Unplanned roads(wide at some places and narrow at junctions): This city (Bangalore) has been awarded many a times for being the best planned city, so called garden city. The roads were planned according to the old city style, not for sure for current traffic needs. Irrespective of that, in many places fly overs are in action, but still we are not able to control traffic.

4. BMTC buses & stops: We cannot blame the public mode of transport, we can restrict the stops and we cannot rule out buses. It’s the main mode of transport in any city.

5. No one bothered about traffic (complain but don't do much): That’s the reason we should take some steps in an innovative manner. It isn’t that nobody is bothered but, many have been just waiting for someone to start.

So out of twenty, I feel five cannot be a cause. Basically these points are not just to discuss, but to bring out a solution for the problem. Let’s stop saying roads are not wide enough as the roads in this city crossed the standards for a city area.

How can we resolve the Traffic Problem?

1. Strict Enforcement

If you've been to Mumbai you know what I mean. Someone commented that India will never improve. It can. Very simple - create fear in each and every road user such that he will never ever think of violating the rules.

How?

Create a dedicated team of honest police, maybe 8-10 in number. Each day, they would choose, randomly, a junction/road and COMPLETELY enforce all the rules. First time offenders would be fined nominally. Second time offenders heavily. Third time offenders' license would be canceled. In case of jaywalking/animals, they would be arrested.

Of course, this requires infrastructure to be upgraded. But lets start enforcing whatever is practical and see the results.

This requires "will" of concerned authorities. Do they have it?

I guess we can improve the traffic situation to a certain extent if all of us follow the traffic laws.

1. It's like nobody here has heard of the lane system.

2. Footpath is not to ride 2 wheelers on.

3. Linking insurance premium to how good a driver you are. Higher premiums for people with bad record

And most importantly as has been mentioned before, better enforcement. Fine drivers for not following lane discipline, for not carrying proper documents etc. I think once people realize there is a heavy financial disincentive to breaking rules it should hopefully get better. And yeah, hope metro becomes a reality fater.

“NO CAR DAY” Sounds like an alternative solution to me

I personally feel that many people are using personal transpotation for travelling to their offices. This acounts for a huge number of vehicles (Cars,Sumos etc) on the roads during the office hours.

I think we should be interested in using a public transport or the office transport a lot. Most of the people still use the car as a status symbol,it should be used only when it is necessary.

Employees should be encouraged to use the office transport. The government should take necessary measures in this aspect.

The below pics clearly reveal that the huge number of personal vehicles are a reason for the traffic.Let us think about having an effective public transport (or a company transport). So can we call one day in the coming months as “No Car Day” and see the difference it can make.

2009-11-2515:54:41 hi to all .. first of all congrats to simplethots team for getting solution for india downfall..!some of friends given good suggestions to resolve trafic problems.rather than implementing new rules and regulations its better to CIVILIZE the people.Like rise the community in every city in that be part students and employed persons from various sectors those who are following trafic rules strictly and ideal to others.keep on moving to increase the members in the community. after some days all citizens in that city become a members of trafic problems resolving community. any comments on this please post it.

2008-07-3015:50:15 1. Car Pooling is a better solution
Easily 4 members can be accomodated and half of the traffice would be reduced.
    2. Use of Parallel local roads instead of main roads
    3. All main roads and local roads should be declared animal free(bullock carts n cows should be avoided)
    4. FlyOvers to different locations

2008-05-3102:36:41 1) To overcome Jumping signals - The government should release a statment like- a chip shuld be attached to all the vehicles. So that if any person crosses the stop line the vehicle number will be traced automatically by th sensor available at the signal and sends a chalan to the owner of the vehicle. it may also overcomes bribing
    2) Short signal post - should be removed
    3) One way traffics should be implimented
    4) No.Of Flyovers should be increased which may reduce atleast 25% of the trafic
    5) Lane system should be implemented
    6) Lane speed shold be implemented- because some citizens may drive slow and some may drive fast

2008-05-3004:31:55 We can reduce the traffic issues in all cities by increasing public transportation. Any city bus you check people are hanging over and almost double the capacity travel in all city services. Government/private collaboration provide more busses /Multi mode transport systems can reduce traffic issues as well as consumption of diesel/ petrol compared to personal transportation. Inflation will be cut too. Governments also needs distribute the infrastructure/developments over different cities. so that people coming from villages/towns will be reduced and can work inhome towns.

2008-05-2912:21:13 Earlier people have already mentioned why we have trafic problem. I would like to suggest remedies for it.

    1. Develop a good metro system with well connectivity.
    2. Encourage workers to come by metro, by giving tax benefits if they dont own a car. This would definitely reduces the demand for fuel and reduces the traffic on roads.
    3. Maintain clear footpaths.
    4. Video monitoring at all major traffic points. Punish them severly if they caught wrong.
    5. Create traffic awareness in people.

2008-05-2908:08:28 what ever the city to control the traffic we should follow the basic traffic rules like do not jump signals, dont blow horn when red signal is on and overtake from right hand side only. we can't force others to follow the rules because first we never ourselves follow the rules so start today to follow the rules our-self then later we will think about otheres. Once we started following rules our selves no need to tell others they automatically follows us..
one more important thing in traffic is parking in no parking areas

    2008-04-3014:04:01 1. No driving sense
    2. No discipline
    3. Not obeying traffic rules [Generic]
    4. Jumping signals
    5. Changing lanes without indication
    6. Due to vehicles running on pedestrian walk
    7. Parked vehicles [at no parking zone]
    8. Lorry [There should be specified times when lorries are allowed and should be strictly followed.]
    9. The concept of collecting fines. Instead there can be a centralized mechanism, where the number of times you violated traffic rules are counted and license barred based on that.
    10. Buses should stop only at designated stops.
    11. Narrow roads
    12. Badly planned roads
    13. Frequent repair works
    14. Roads once laid should withstand for a longer duration
    15. Political party meetings/banners/hoardings/flags

2008-04-3009:33:22 Traffic can be managed to a large extent if all those who drive any sort of vehicle, drive with some sense and discipline.

We know that everyone is currently living in a fast paced world. Everyone wants to go first. So, no body thinks of others. They just have one motive: to be the first. If this attitude is cleared, things will get normal.

If we apply some common sense, then we can avoid most of the traffic snarls. For example, I have seen many instances, where the vehicles would have crossed the stop line and then stop because there is a red signal for him. Because of this, the other vehicles that are crossing the road/junction cannot use the junction, since it is almost occupied by the guy who has crossed the stop line. There are many cases where many people go on the wrong side, because there is traffic on the side they are supposed to be driving. But, they do not understand that this will cause problems to others.

    2008-04-1611:01:39 Hello All,
I have been to bangalore only twice till date. I am working in Hyderabad. Believe me traffic conditions are equally bad here, if not worse. Here also we are stuck in traffic signals for long times. Most of the times it takes 1.5-2 hours to travel a distance of 25 kms. Who is to be blamed for this??
I would say it is not just one thing or two, it is the cumulative effect of a number of factors. People do not have traffic sense, No one believes in following lanes or signals. And when they are caught, they get away by offering a sum as low as 50/-. But, its not corruption that we are discussing here.
That was one. Second most important factor is the unplanned development of a city. Here most of the software companies are located in one area and collectively in all of them around 30-50k people are work, excluding the support staffs. Rather than concentrating the IT hub at one place it would really help if it is spread all around the city it would really help a lot.
